A week with the Inkas – part 1

A week with the Inkas – part 2

Day 4:

MACHU PICCHU!

What a magical place! The day was extremely foggy, adding more to the mystery around the ancient ruins. (中文請往下) I was up at 4am, to try and catch the sunrise on top, however it was too foggy to see that day.

You can either walk up to Machu Picchu in an hour or take the bus for $12USD one way, lasting 30minutes. Buses are from 5.30-18.00,  don’t miss the last one, or you will have to walk! Make sure to take your passport with you, as you need it to buy the bus ticket and for entrance into Machu Picchu.

If you are going up to Machu Picchu by yourself, make sure to buy the entrance ticket beforehand. Months beforehand if you want to also climb the Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain inside, as tickets are limited to 400 and 800 people per day respectively. The limit to Machu Picchu is 2,500 per day.

Buy tickets here, it’s slightly confusing as you need to book the slots first, then once you have the reservation code, you can use that to make payment online separately, visa only! Then you need to print out the ticket physically, no e-tickets!

At the gate of the site, there are many guides that you can employ. It’s usually around 2 hours tour, costing 120Sols, so the more people you get, the less you pay! Guides can also go up either of the 2 mountains with you, that’s another price. I ended up negotiating a guide for both the Huayna Picchu and main site tour for 200Sols, spending about 5 hours in total.

The climb up Huayna Picchu was tough, very steep stairs, some pretty narrow that you need to hold on to the wire ropes on the side and use your hands. Although not death defying as people seem to suggest. It’s 2700m high, and once on top you are suppose to see the Machu Picchu city below. Unfortunately the day was foggy and cloudy so I didn’t get a good view, but it was rewarding nevertheless!

There are many temples and alters around the site, some up the mountains, some in the citadel. You can almost hike up to all of them. There’s plenty to see and do here, it’s easy to spend a whole day. I suggest hiring a guide to talk through all the meanings, otherwise you just see a lot of big stones!

With the entrance ticket, you can exit and re-enter the site three times the same day. Make sure you use it wisely as all the facilities are outside the site, like the restaurant, toilets etc. The restaurant offers buffet lunch for $40USD, toilets cost 1Sol. Basically everything cost money up here, so I suggest bring plenty of water and food.

Tip: You can stamp your passport with an official Machu Picchu stamp, located to the left just inside the entrance gate!

Enough of logistic, please enjoy the rest in photos, as words doesn’t do the place justice. Even my photos don’t, you have to see it for yourself!
